Cemex Gets $800 Mln Bank Loan to Pay Debt, Cut Costs
Cemex SA, the world's third-largest cement maker, borrowed $800 million from a group of banks to pay back debt early and help reduce borrowing costs.
The Monterrey, Mexico-based company has drawn on cash reserves to reduce net debt to $5.3 billion in first quarter from a high of $7.1 billion at the end of 2000, a period when slow U.S. and Mexican economic growth reduced its profits. Cemex has already paid off $300 million of U.S. commercial paper early and plans to repay $550 million of a $1.15 billion loan using proceeds from the new loan, as well as cash, Rodrigo Trevino, the company's chief financial officer, said in a statement.
Cemex didn't disclose the names of the banks or terms of the new loan.
Cemex expects revenue will increase 4 percent to $7.5 billion this year from 2003 and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization -- a measure of cash flow known as Ebitda -- will rise 11 percent to $2.35 billion on the back of cost savings, Lorenzo Zambrano, chairman and chief executive officer, said in the statement.
Higher profits reflect ``gathering global economic momentum, which is translating into robust top line growth in most of our markets,'' he said.
Mexico is Cemex's largest market, accounting for 36 percent of its $7.2 billion of revenue in 2003. The U.S. -- where Cemex is the largest cement seller -- accounts for 24 percent of revenue and Spain for 17 percent.
Zambrano said free cash flow, which is cash left over after paying all expenses that can be used to reduce debt, pay dividends and buy companies, will be about $1.35 billion this year, 18 percent higher from $1.14 billion in 2003.
