Vietnam's Building Boom May Lead To Cement Shortage
Vietnam might face a cement shortage of as much as 6.5 million tonnes in 2005, warned the Vietnam Cement Corporation (VNCC).
According to the VNCC's calculations, demand for cement next year may be 29.1 million tonnes, while total productivity will fall well short of that at 22.6 million tonnes.
The corporation attributed the projected shortage to fast-growing demand for cement due to the rapid urbanisation process.
In the last two years, demand has increased by 4.5 million tonnes annually, while production capacity has increased by only 2.5 million tonnes.
Additionally, 10 cement production projects with a total capacity of 17.2 million tonnes have fallen behind schedule, with some of them as many as three years late due to financial difficulties and slow compensation for site clearance.
In an effort to meet market demand for 2005, the Ministry of Construction has urged enterprises and relevant bodies to devise a plan for importing more clinker for production and to step up the pace of construction on cement projects.
The Tam Diep cement project in the northern province of Ninh Binh, which will have a capacity of 1.4 million tonnes, is expected to be operational by the end of this year.
In the first eight months of the year, the industry produced 16 million tonnes of cement, an increase of 7.5 per cent over the same period last year.
